NIKKEI FORUM 29th FUTURE OF ASIA Seminar Series 3rd session Indonesia’s new administration: President Prabowo’s policies and the impact on Japan-Indonesia business
On October 20, Prabowo Subianto took office as the new president of Indonesia. Prabowo has voiced his intention to continue with the policies of his predecessor, Joko Widodo, which elevated Indonesia’s international status as a key member of the “Global South” by achieving solid economic growth and political stability. However, Prabowo is suspected of being involved in human rights violations during his career in the military and there are concerns that his authoritarian tendencies could lead to a regression of democracy, signs of which were seen during the Joko administration. On the economic front, Prabowo has indicated a shift to an expansionary fiscal policy which could result in an increase in the budget deficit. As an economic powerhouse in Southeast Asia, Indonesia is a very important destination for investment by Japanese companies. In this seminar, experts in politics and economics will discuss the outlook for Indonesia’s new administration.

NIKKEI FORUM 29th FUTURE OF ASIA Seminar Series 1st session How will India’s economic and foreign policy change in Narendra Modi’s third term?
In the recent lower house election in India, the ruling National Democratic Alliance won a majority securing a third straight term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, the NDA lost as many as 60 seats, mainly due to farmers’ discontent and backlash over Modi’s Hindu nationalist policies. Modi will now have to depend on junior partners in the coalition to govern. Lessons from the election will push the government to devote more effort to improving the livelihood of farmers and the impoverished. Modi will also have to contend with leaders of regional parties in the coalition who frequently prioritize the interest of their own constituencies. In this session of "FUTURE OF ASIA" seminar, experts will examine the economic and foreign policy of Modi’s third term.
