Toru Nishikawa established Preferred Infrastructure Inc., the predecessor to his current company, with a university friend while studying at Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, The University of Tokyo in 2006. The company developed software that made use of technologies including information searching, natural language processing, machine learning, and distributed systems. It won the Information Processing Society of Japan’s Software Japan Award in 2013.

 

As technologies related to the internet of things (IoT) have advanced, deep learning has begun to receive attention as a technology that allows for the processing of large-scale, highly-varied data. Nishikawa’s current company Preferred Networks, Inc. was established in order to accelerate initiatives related to deep learning.
The company is currently collaborating with companies and organizations such as Toyota Motor Corporation, FANUC CORPORATION, and the National Cancer Center.
