Leveraging Asia’s power to confront global challenges

Asia, which accounts for 60% of the world's population and 40% of the world's economy, has the potential to lead the world in tackling global challenges such as climate change, sustainability, inflation, erosion of democratic values, poverty, economic disparity and so on. The region has abundant natural resources, young and diverse population, technology, and innovative ideas. However, few will refute that the region is still far from fulfilling its rich potential. In the 28th FUTURE OF ASIA, government leaders, corporate executives, and academics will come together to discuss how the region can unlock and mobilize its potential to solve common issues in a multipolar world.

About

FUTURE OF ASIA is an international gathering where political, economic, and academic leaders from the Asia-Pacific region offer their opinions frankly and freely on regional issues and the role of Asia in the world. Held by Nikkei every year since 1995, it is considered to be one of the most important global conferences in Asia.

DAY 1-6

In today's world, where it is increasingly difficult to predict the future, the next generation is expected to actively work to improve society and enhance well-being through various activities, including business. To do so, it is becoming more and more important to experience different cultures, maintain an "open" attitude to various possibilities and values, and build international partnerships that transcend national borders. In this session, young Asian businesspersons and social entrepreneurs, who have developed new businesses and global activities through being inspired by different cultures, will discuss the importance of cultural exchanges in nurturing the next generation.

Asia is a society of diverse people in terms of gender, race and religion. By accepting each other's differences and working in their own way, societies, including economies, can develop. However, it is also true that there is discrimination and disparity due to historical circumstances and prejudice.
What is needed to realize a society that recognizes diversity? The discussion will focus on the advancement of women and the protection of the rights of sexual minorities, with examples of advanced initiatives.

Preparing for the risk of climate change is a challenge facing the entire world, and not only governments but also corporations are under pressure to respond. The world is watching closely the energy reforms being undertaken in Asia, which is home to many emerging economies, as well as major economies such as China and Japan, and where carbon dioxide emissions account for half of the world's total. To achieve both growth and decarbonization policies, it may be time for Asian countries to seek their own unique approach, rather than following the Western-led approach that has been used in the past.
